Maggie Sherwood & The Floating Foundation of Photography
Recapturing the 70's in Photographs
Opening Reception: Thursday, November 4th, 7:00 - 9:00pm
Jon Tomlinson Industries is pleased to present an exhibition of vintage photographs by Maggie Sherwood and The Floating Foundation of Photography – a unique organization founded in 1969 to showcase the work of then-emerging / now-famous photographers as well as assist diverse “disenfranchised” populations with their self-expression.
In 1969, Maggie Sherwood bought a houseboat that she turned into a photography gallery and painted it purple. While moored at the 79th Street Boat Basin from 1969 until 1976, it became known as the “little boat that could.” Sherwood was passionate about promoting unknown photographers (Lilo Raymond, Neal Slavin, Helen Buttfield, Robert D’Alessandro, Arthur Tress, Melissa Shook, and Eva Rubinstein amongst others) and often included their work in shows with her professional photographer friends such as Lisette Model and W. Eugene Smith. Sherwood herself was also recognized as an innovative New York City photographer (1922 – 1984). Her work is in the collections of the Smithsonian and The Bibliothèque Nationale as well as many private collections.
Exhibition Details:On display from November 4th - November 30th
